Namibia

Desert Oasis - La Mirage Desert Lodge & Spa opens.  When you see the aptly names La Mirage Desert Lodge & Spa shimmering in the Namib Desert, you may think it is an optical illusion.  But this new resort on the edge of Namibia's Namib-Naukluft Park, near the world's highest sand dunes, at Sossusvlei, is real.  The easiest way to get there is to fly in a light aircraft from Windhoek over mountains and river-beds, swooping down to get a look at zebras and antelope.  A compound of low-lying buildings with arches. Le Mirage resembles a north Africa fort.  Walk under one arch to get to a cool reception area; go through another to reach the restaurant, with its spectacular views of the sunset.  The twenty-seven rooms are simply furnished in desert shades.  Honeymooners will love to stargaze from the two turret suites.  The food is delicious; impala capriccio, eland ragout and other local game dishes are served with vegetables.  Guests can climb the dunes, ride in a hot-air balloon or take quad bike tours and then retire to the small spa or the outdoor pool.
