Rocking through the ages -
Bushman's Kloof.
Newly
appointed Resident
Archeologist and Curator,
Siyakha Mguni is breaking new
ground at Bushman's Kloof.
Apart from sharing his passion
for ancient Bushman rock are
with guests visiting the
Reserve, his mission is the
creation of a database that
will culminate in an
integrated Rock Art Management
Plan that can be used as a
standard in the Cederberg
region. This is will be
accomplished by recording,
documenting and researching
all of the 130 known sites,
plus any potential new sites
on the reserve. He also
remains close links with Dr.
John Parkington of the UCT
Archaeological Department,
where is is an associate
lecturer, as well as the
Clanwilliam-based Living
landscape project, a community
based initiative, whereby
local guides benefit from
guiding tourists to the rock
art around Clanwilliam.
The creation of this database
will also be used for
interpretative purposes,
enabling people to come and
view the painting from various
perspectives, to depart with a
clearer understanding of the
complex rituals, life and
times of the San people.
A powerful storyline, and a
significant piece of history
in the making.
