Londolozi South Africa; new
frontiers in eco-friendly
technology.
Londolozi GM,
Stoff Kane Berman, loves
playing with cars, electronic
gadgets and new frontiers in
eco-friendly technology. He
has been the moving spirit in
the creation of the 1st ever
battery powered safari
vehicle; the 1st ever high
tech specialist photographic
night vision and sound safari
vehicle; the 1st ever solar
powered people mover (between
camps) and the 1st ever
battery powered tractor. Added
to his zero emissions policy,
Kane Berman has gone to war on
plastic bottled water. This
water has been needlessly
transported thousands of miles
into a Game Reserve which has
2 perennial rivers running
through it. As such he has
commissioned the construction
of a Londolozi bottling plant
using reusable glass bottles.
In addition Kane Berman is
simultaneously working on
banning all future use of
packaged and transported
plastic bottled water into
Londolozi. During 2009 Kane
Berman has also insisted that,
where practical, the fresh
vegetables for the kitchen be
bought within a 150 kilometer
radius of the Lodge with a
strong focus on supporting the
local farm growers. Also to
recycle, restore and maintain
equipment locally. Solar
powered water heating and
water driven electrical
generation are on his drawing
board for 2010 as he
determinedly sets about
transforming, step by step,
the Londolozi model until we
achieve Sustainability at all
levels..
Mwea School/Fund - Kenya.
AfricaTours supports several
worthy projects in various
areas in Africa. We
encourage our clients to visit
and participate in these
worthy programs. We will
feature the charities that we
support in forthcoming
Newsletters. Mwea is a
small, agricultural village
located about fifty miles
northeast of Nairobi, Kenya,
East Africa. The Mwea Fund was
created unofficially in
September 2002, when five
friends attached a fundraiser
to a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb for
the very poor but promising
Mwea Primary School. Within
weeks, enough money was raised
for the completion of three
new, badly needed classroom
buildings; older, decrepit
buildings were refurbished,
protective metal shutters were
added and some new desks were
built. In 2003, we were able
to continue classroom
restoration, we replaced many
tattered and worn student
uniforms with new higher
quality ones; and a hot lunch
program for the neediest
children was initiated. By
2006, The Mwea Fund was
sponsoring secondary education
tuition for approximately 20
high school age students. At
present, The Mwea Fund is
aiding in the construction of
several more classrooms and a
multipurpose community reading
room at Mwea Primary School.
We are also partnering with
other primary schools in the
Mwea area to improve the
educational opportunities for
children in those communities.
