Day 1 Mombasa: Serena Beach Hotel / Hemingway’s Hotel (D); Lamu Peponi Hotel (LD)
You may begin this Beach Holiday at the beginning or at the end of your safari. Fly from Nairobi to Mombasa on a scheduled flight. Arrive into Mombasa, where you will be met by an AfricaTours representative and escorted to the hotel.

The Serena Beach Hotel is a timeless beauty on the Kenyan coast. Reflected in its unique architectural style, the ocean is the inspiration for the hotel. Coral arches and decorative walls border the main public areas. Although visitors discover the tranquility and romance of a long forgotten era, they find the standards of service; comfort and entertainment geared for modern tastes, making this, the only Kenyan coast hotel a member of the “Leading Hotels of the World.” Situated within Shanzu Marine Park, the hotel lies on a white sandy beach, 12 miles north of Kenya’s main port of Mombasa. A courtesy shuttle bus operates between the hotel and town. The hotel has 166 air-conditioned rooms, each with its own private bath, shower and balcony. Minibars and hairdryers have been installed in each room. The hotel cuisine is based on fine fresh Kenyan produce. Different buffets and menus are as authentic and characteristic to the origins of the dish as possible. The menu leans towards “cuisine naturel” and all of the hotel’s restaurants have their own menus prepared to please the palate as well as the eye. A comprehensive entertainment program includes African dancing, floorshows, live bands and disco music. Other facilities include two floodlit tennis courts, two air-conditioned squash courts and a watersports center.

Hemingway’s Hotel is a privately-owned hotel built right at the edge of the beach — the ocean can be seen from most rooms. The impression is one of pristine whitewash and spacious stone terraces. There are two sparkling blue swimming pools and a multitude of very tall coconut palms that continually wave in the breeze. It is known for deep-sea fishing and is also a romantic and relaxing getaway, popular with honeymooners. The bar, dining room, and reception area are in huge white Rondavels with dramatic soaring thatched roofs, so distinctive of the area. The main dining room has a sunken central area for buffet, band and dance floor. There are two wings: an older sea-view wing, which has double rooms, and a brand new ‘superior’ wing, which includes triplets and suites. The new wing is two and three-story high and angles back from the beach. You can see to the ocean beyond the gardens and swimming pools. All rooms have air conditioning, mosquito nets, fans and a safe for valuables. All of the rooms except the suites have a balcony and a shower. The suites have bathtubs in addition to showers and a large sitting area instead of a balcony. Sliding glass doors open the rooms to light and air and distant sea views. All rooms are now equipped with coffee/tea facilities and fridges. The hotel boasts a well-equipped conference suite with seating capacity for 50 delegates. Activities include fishing (deep sea and inshore), snorkeling trips in a glass-bottom boat, windsurfing diving, dhow trips on Mida Creek, free trips to Malindi for shopping and to the nearby Gede ruins.

Peponi Hotel. “Peponi” is the Swahili word meaning the place where there is coolness, rest and relief from trouble —“In Paradise.” The Peponi Hotel is situated at the entrance to Lamu Harbor, which dates back to the 10th Century, at a place called Shella, a very picturesque fishing village with its own mosques, complete with minarets. Lamu is one of the oldest towns on the East African Coast, known for its Arab-style architecture, very narrow streets that permit only pedestrians, and where cars and bicycles are unknown. Transport is by dhow or donkey. The hotel overlooks Manda Island. All rooms have their own verandahs facing the sea and are complete with all the modern conveniences. In addition, one is able to step from the verandah onto the beach, which stretches for 8 miles, and enjoy a carefree swim or walk, without any other sign of habitation to disturb them. The bathing is perfectly safe and one is able to water-ski, sail or goggle within a few feet of the hotel. Deep-sea fishing is excellent in these waters. Deep-sea fishing boats are available for charter, as well as the hotel’s Arab Dhow “Pepo”, which is ideal for exciting day cruises around the islands. Fresh seafood is a cuisine specialty prepared by their East African Chefs. At the Peponi Hotel, informality is the dress of the day; all one needs are swimsuits, light dresses for the ladies and shorts or long trousers with shirts for men.
