Day-by-day itinerary

Sat Day 1 Depart on KLM from your gateway city.

Sun Day 2 Arusha: Rivertrees Country Inn
Arrive into Amsterdam and connect with your flight to Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro, you will be met by an AfricaTours representative and driven to Arusha. Arusha is nestled at the base of Mount Meru, Africa's fourth largest mountain (14,979 ft). Arusha derives its name from the Warusha people, a tribe of Masai who settled around the base of Mount Meru in order to cultivate the land. Rivertrees Country Inn is nestled between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, in natural gardens along the Usa River. Combining old world ambiance, African country elegance, excellent farm cuisine, personal service and genuine warmth from your hosts, Rivertrees is simply a magical place to stay.

Mon Day 3 Tarangire National Park: Tamarind Camp (BLD)
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire via the colorful local market in Mto Mbu Village. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive. Tarangire is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania, measuring some 1,000 square miles. The first thing to capture the eye as you enter Tarangire is the vast numbers of Baobab trees, which dwarf the animals feeding beneath them. Masai giraffe, Grant's and Thompson's gazelle, hartebeest, impala, kudu, reedbuck, gerenuk, klipspringer, fox and the usual collections of baboons, warthog and ostrich abound. During the dry season from June to November, animals concentrate along the Tarangire River that provides the only permanent water supply in Masai land. The Tamarind Camp is set in 200 acres on the boundary of Tarangire National Park in northern Tanzania. Surrounded by grassland, the Camp stands in a grove of beautiful acacia Tortillis trees next to a seasonal tree lined riverbed, along which there are also magnificent baobabs. It is seasonally frequented by plains game, and you may even be lucky enough to be joined for breakfast by elephants. Tamarind Camp is rustic yet comfortable and highly personalized. It is limited currently to 7 Larsen size tents set up in traditional Classic Style, with toilet and shower en-suite, with a covered dining tent and bar, the camp-fire area, and a friendly crew available to take care of every need. Masai guided ethno-botanical nature walks are available from camp on a complimentary basis, and visits to a nearby Masai manyatta provide a fascinating insight into the local culture. The majestic terrain of Tarangire National Park offers tremendous game-viewing as the park teems with wildlife in the dry season and is particularly renowned for its vast herds of elephant and large predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah, and civets, jackals and the rare wild hunting dogs. Under the stars of the African sky, sit by the campfire and treasure the intimate experience of being at one with nature, in comfort and style.

Tue Day 4 Tarangire National Park: Tamarind Camp (BLD)
Enjoy a full day of game drives with picnic lunch, ranging far and wide. The elephants have a fascinating way of communicating with subtle interactions, that your Guide will be able to point out and share with you. In the late afternoon, you will head back to camp and set out for a bush walk with local Maasai guides.

Wed Day 5 Lake Manyara National Park: Kirurumu Tented Camp (BLD)
Drive to Lake Manyara National Park, passing through the cool ground water forest before reaching the Lakeshore. The Park is best known for its tree climbing lions, but you are more likely to see elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, primates and a wealth of bird life. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and an afternoon game drive. Return as the sun sets behind the distant highlands and climb the escarpment to Kirurumu Tented Lodge for a relaxing dinner. Kirurumu Lodge is a luxury-tented lodge built upon the Gregorian Escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Set in a stunning location, it overlooks a spectacular panorama across Lake Manyara and to Mt. Losimongori. Kirurumu is sympathetically built of local material and is inspired by the nearby traditional Mbulu tribal dwellings. Natural vegetation has been left untouched and there are no non-indigenous species. The aim is simply luxury and comfort and eco-friendliness. The well-spaced tents are private and secluded and each is raised on a base of natural stone and has a cooling thatched roof that covers and shades the deck style wooden verandah. Accommodation is simple but luxurious, secure and insect proof. Bedrooms are comfortable with twin or double beds with warm duvets that guard against the dawn chill. Modern en-suite bathrooms have hot and cold water and flush toilets. Meals are served in the airy hilltop dining room offering a selection of traditional and international menus.

Thu Day 6 Ngorongoro Crater: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (BLD)
Early morning ethno-botanical walks including visit to local Iraqw tribe. After breakfast, depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area, ascending to the rim and onwards to the descent road. Descend into the Crater for a tour around the Lerai Acacia Forest and the crater floor, looking for giant-tusked elephant, rare black rhino and the black-maned lion. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's hallowed places - a giant amphitheater ten miles across; "stamped like a hoofprint deep into the green hills of Africa" says one writer. The floor of this ancient volcanic crater encompasses a self-contained ecosystem, which sustains the greatest concentration of wildlife on earth! As you descend into the 100 square mile crater, the inert dots viewed from the top come to life and animals appear in small groups, like actors on a sunken stage of staggering and relentless beauty. Soon you are eye to eye with the animals, the beloved little "Tommie" with ever-flagging black tail, buffalo, rhino, lion, zebra, giraffe and elephant — acting out a drama of life and death on an epic scale. There are birds too, in abundance - vultures, hideous pink-necked marabou storks and thousands upon thousands of greater and lesser flamingos wading carefully through the shallow waters of the crater's small soda lake. The Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is constructed of local stone and is molded onto the contours of its site. The Ngorongoro Serena affords to its guests breathtaking views of the 102 square mile Crater below and of the wealth of the surroundings animal and bird life. All 75 rooms are equipped with environmentally friendly heat exchange units and the roof-scape has been constructed in such a fashion that it collects significant amounts of fresh water from rainwater thus conserving this precious local commodity.

Fri Day 7 Ngorongoro Crater: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (BLD)
Enjoy morning game-drives in the Ngorongoro Crater, followed by lunch back at Ngorongoro Serena. In the afternoon, you head out to the rolling hills of the Ngorongoro Highlands to meet a Maasai chief, who guides you around the nearby boma’s and on an afternoon walk in the surrounding area.

Sat Day 8 Serengeti National Park: Mobile Tented Camp (BLD)
In the morning, depart for the Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge to visit the small but interesting museum of this famous archaeological site. Continue on a game-drive through the vast Serengeti National Park to the Mobile Tented Camp for lunch. In the afternoon, head out for an afternoon game drive before returning to the camp. The Serengeti National Park — a 12,800 square mile wilderness of semi-arid grasslands and woodlands in Tanzania's northwestern corner is the pulsating heart of East Africa. Its immense grass oceans and riverine forests are home to the largest concentration of large predators and plains game in Africa. The Serengeti's pulse beats to the migration cycle. In the spring, the bright green of the grass gives the Serengeti an air of sparkling freshness. Then, the meadows reverberate with the thunder of millions of hooves — with the snarls of hyenas and hunting dogs in hot pursuit — as vast hordes of wildebeest and zebra begin their great annual migration: the most impressive wildlife pageant on earth. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive. Experience camping in the traditional way, camping that captures the romance and style of a bygone era. The tents are roomy walk-in-tents with an en-suite bathroom attached with flush toilet and hot and cold showers. Each tent has two camp beds, with a mattress, linen, camp chair table, washstand and private verandah a special supply vehicle travels on the safari to carry all the equipment, food, cook and waiters. The supply vehicle goes ahead of the safari group and sets up the campsite before you arrive from your day of game viewing. It is sometimes hard to believe that in the middle of the Serengeti’s wilderness you will be served gourmet meals while relaxing under the African canopy of stars — this is the ultimate safari experience that will linger in your memory and want to make you return.

Sun Day 9 Serengeti National Park: Mobile Tented Camp (BLD)
Enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive. Return to the camp for an evening of story telling around the campfire and shared experience from the day’s events.

Mon Day 10 Serengeti National Park: Mobile Tented Camp (BLD)
