Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Depart on KLM from your gateway city.

Day 2 Arusha: Arusha Coffee Lodge
Arrive into Amsterdam and connect with your flight to Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro, you will be met by an AfricaTours representative and escorted to your hotel. Arusha derives its name from the Warusha people, a tribe of Masai who settled around the base of Mount Meru in order to cultivate the land. Guest’s en-route to the adventurous Tanzanian Northern Circuit can look forward to a luxurious send off at Arusha Coffee Lodge. Inspired by the grace and romance of a fine ‘old-time’ coffee plantation, guests can anticipate accommodation of the highest standard with 21 private chalets featuring multi-level areas, huge balconies and beautiful fireplaces. Each chalet has its own bedroom, bathroom and living room. There is a coffee grinder and percolator in the spirit of a true coffee estate experience.

Day 3 Serengeti National Park: Grumeti River Lodge (BLD)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Grumeti River Lodge. Enjoy an afternoon game drive. The Serengeti National Park, a 12,800 square mile wilderness of semi-arid grasslands and woodlands in Tanzania's northwestern corner is the pulsating heart of East Africa. Its immense grass oceans and riverine forests are home to the largest concentration of large predators and plains game in Africa. The Serengeti's pulse beats to the migration cycle. In the spring, the bright green of the grass gives the Serengeti an air of sparkling freshness. Then, the meadows reverberate with the thunder of millions of hooves — with the snarls of hyenas and hunting dogs in hot pursuit — as vast hordes of wildebeest and zebra begin their great annual migration: the most impressive wildlife pageant on earth. In the untouched seclusion of a remote valley in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, this splendid tented camp overlooks a bywater of the Grumeti River where wildebeest plunge through the waters, running the gauntlet of gigantic crocodiles, on the annual migration. The whimsical sweep of flamboyant tents under thatch and the vibrancy of kente cloth and local sculptured furnishings bring alive the excitement and romance of Africa. Each of the 10 spacious twin-bedded tents, complete with en-suite bathrooms, lies along the banks of the river and hippo pools. Interpretive game drive, explore the Serengeti Savannah’s and woodlands, which boast the largest mass of free-ranging animals on earth, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, eland and giraffe as well as some of the highest densities of cheetah in Africa, huge prides of lion and solitary leopards. And at night, around a starlit banquet, stories are shared of the day’s game sightings and guest’s wide-eyed experience of the majesty and exhilaration of wild Africa.

Day 4 Serengeti National Park: Grumeti River Lodge (BLD)
Enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive in the Serengeti.

Day 5 Serengeti National Park: Grumeti River Lodge (BLD)
Enjoy another day of game viewing with a morning and afternoon game drive.

Day 6 Ngorongoro Crater: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (BLD)
After a morning game drive and breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's hallowed places - a giant amphitheater ten miles across; "stamped like a hoofprint deep into the green hills of Africa" says one writer. The floor of this ancient volcanic crater encompasses a self-contained ecosystem, which sustains the greatest concentration of wildlife on earth! Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera of the once-volcanic Ngorongoro shelters the most beautiful wildlife haven left on earth. Some of Africa’s last breeding black rhino are protected within its rim, black-manned lions stalk the grasslands, flamingos crowd the soda lakes and giant tusked elephants wander the forests. Towering euphorbias cling to the crater walls and on the floor, fever and fig tree forests give shade to an awe-inspiring array of creatures. Perched on the ancient crater rim far above the swirling mists, the architectural masterpiece of the Ngorongoro Carter Lodge is a magnificent return to noble elegance of the traveling colonials. Inspired in design by the Masai manyatta, three separate camps of six to twelve suites each hark back to a bygone era when characters such as Lord Delamere adorned the hand-crafted structures with graceful antiques, grand chandeliers and magnificent four-poster beds hand-carved in Zanzibar. All of this however remains subordinate to the magnificence of the verdant crater — as each suite opens out to Africa’s greatest vista. A trip to the Ngorongoro is a pilgrimage you should take at least once in a lifetime.

Day 7 Ngorongoro Crater: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (BLD)
Enjoy a magical crater tour. As you descend into the 100 square mile crater, the inert dots viewed from the top come to life and animals appear in small groups, like actors on a sunken stage of staggering and relentless beauty. Soon you are eye to eye with the animals, the beloved little "Tommie" with ever-flagging black tail, buffalo, rhino, lion, zebra, giraffe and elephant — acting out a drama of life and death on an epic scale. There are birds too, in abundance — vultures, hideous pink-necked marabou storks and thousands upon thousands of greater and lesser flamingos wading carefully through the shallow waters of the crater's small soda lake.

Day 8 Ngorongoro Crater: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (BLD)
Enjoy full day Crater Tour.

Day 9 Lake Manyara:
Lake Manyara Tree Lodge (BLD)
After breakfast drive to Lake Manyara for lunch. Enjoy a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Covering a relatively small area, it encompasses five distinct vegetation zones ranging from an area of ground water forest to characteristic scrubland on the precipitous face of the Rift Valley wall. A variety of wildlife such as buffalo, elephant, leopard, lions (sometimes seen on trees), giraffe and pink flamingoes on the lake shore, are abundant. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge has been designed to exert minimal impact on the environment. The lodge boasts 10 spacious tree houses cradled in the boughs of mahogany trees and is situated about a kilometer from the lakeshore. The tree houses have been crafted from local timber and makuti (palm fronds) and feature large open decks and spacious rooms with large windows to invite the flourishing forest into the luxurious elegance of each room. The bedrooms consist of four-poster bed-like draping and earthy, understated accessories in natural colors and textures. Overhead fans and mosquito nets as well as en suite bathrooms with baths and large twin hand basins ensure that every comfort is attended to. There is an exhilarating outdoor shower while the private verandas have comfortable furniture and offer extensive views of the lovely forest environment. There is a magnificent open-plan guest area with an intimate and cozy atmosphere overlooking the forest boma, with enough seating for 20 people. There is also a stylish lap pool and a crafts gallery, which features a good selection of community craftwork. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge also offers the classic Tanzanian private butler service. A gleaming, chrome-accessorized interactive kitchen includes guests in the preparation of delicious Pan-African cuisine. In the theatrical boma (reeded enclosure), tandoori ovens produce heavenly cuisine. Meals are enjoyed in the open-air boma, the dining area, on the decks in the guest area or on the guests’ private viewing decks. Breakfasts and picnics are also savored on the lakeshore.

Day 10 Lake Manyara: Lake Manyara Tree Lodge (BLD)
Enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive.

Day 11 Departure (BL)
After a morning game drive and breakfast, fly to Arusha for lunch. You will have the use of a dayroom before transferring to the airport for your departure flight.

Day 12 Arrive into Amsterdam in the morning and connect with your flight to the USA.
