The home of walking safaris, Zambia was the first country to allow walking safaris in the National Parks. Walk along the Mupamadzi River for 5 days expiring the spectacular countryside and abundant game.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 South Luangwa Valley: Nkwali Camp (D)
Arrive in Mfuwe on a scheduled charter flight from Lusaka, where you will be met by a camp representative and escorted to Nkwali. Enjoy an afternoon of game viewing. Nkwali is located on Robin's private land, overlooking the National Park. The land is superb game viewing country, with a beautiful area of ebony woodland and open grasslands. Elephants regularly cross the Luangwa, seen from the bar, or come to the waterhole near the thatched dining room. The chalets are cool and spacious, overlooking the river. Access to the park is by boat or our nearby pontoon. The area is famous for leopard and giraffe sightings. Nkwali is open all year and the seasons are basically divided into the “dry season” (mid May – October) and the “green season” (November – mid May). There are 6 rooms for a maximum of 12 guests, each with en-suite bathrooms. Enjoy walking safaris, game drives and night game drives.
Day 2 South Luangwa Valley: Nkwali Camp (BLD)
Enjoy a full day of game viewing. A typical day - if there is such a thing - starts with the wake up call just before dawn. Tea and coffee, cereals and toast are announced soon after, and then the walk or drive leaves the camp. A mid morning stop with tea/coffee and cake keeps you going until you return to the camp anytime between 9:30 am and mid-day. After brunch, there is a chance to rest, read or spend a few quite hours at the hide. At 4:00 pm, following afternoon tea and cake, the afternoon game drive or walk leaves the camp. The drive takes sundowners and continue with a night game drive returning to the camp at around 8:00 pm. Drinks at the bar, a delicious three course dinner and a nightcap sitting around the camp fire, under the stars finishes the day in the bush. Fall into bed at around 10:30 pm, as the hyenas call.
Day 3-7 Mobile Walking Safari (BLD)
After breakfast, begin you mobile walking safari. You will drive to the start of the Mobile Safari (about 4 hours from Nkwali). The camps are extremely well equipped with walk-in tents, camp beds, mattress and full bedding. The toilet is a long drop with a wooden throne. The shower has mixed hot and cold water. Meals of a high standard are served on a table under the open sky. A caterer and eight well trained field staff run the camp. An armed wildlife scout escorts all safaris. The safari has daily radio contact with National Parks and Nkwali. To walk through such an untouched part of Africa is indeed a privilege. Three Camps will be set up during the course of the 5-day mobile safari. All equipment will be moved ahead of the group by vehicle. These walking safaris take place in one of the most inaccessible areas of the South Luangwa, the Mupamadzi River. The countryside is both spectacular and diverse, with hills, woodlands and vast grass plains. From ants to elephants, a bird's nest to tracking a pride of lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush.
Day 8 South Luangwa Valley: Tena Tena (BLD)
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Luangwa River, opposite Tena Tena. This is a 4 to 5 hour transfer returning back down the same road for the most part. Tena Tena staff will boat the party across the river, and then a short 20 min drive to the camp. Lunch, siesta and afternoon/night drive. "Tena Tena Camp is altogether beyond superlatives, and must be one of the best safari camps in the whole of Africa". This remote and small camp lies within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. A grove of mahogany trees shade the large custom-made tents. From the thatched dining room and bar, guests can watch the elephants, hippo and antelope on the river banks. Near by there is a spectacular lagoon, Buca Buca, where a whole morning can be spent quietly sitting while the game comes down to feed and drink. With the camp being remote and small, we have these scenes to ourselves. Tena Tena is open from May to October. There are 5 rooms for a maximum of 8-10 guests, each with en-suite bathrooms. Enjoy walking safaris, game drives and night game drives.
Day 9 South Luangwa Valley: Tena Tena (BLD)
Enjoy a full day of game viewing.
Day 10 South Luangwa Valley: Tena Tena (BLD)
